The lights were low, the house was full, and the two-person band played on. Me and The Kid performed songs from their new EP, To his ignorance. This, the principle release, contains but a parcel of the bands material.
Dave Magario and Zack Ciras started the band, Me and The Kid (MaTK), as the result of having to reorganize themselves after the downfall of their previos project, Post No Bills. PnB consisted of Dave, Zack, and an extremely talented musician and songwriter, Brian Chenard. Brian played the guitar, Zack the bass, Dave played keys as Chenard and Magario shared vocal duites. "I didn't play guitar until the very end of Post No Bills lifespan," reminisced Dave. PnB had recorded most of an album and showed promise in several scenes. however, Brian had started to lose his focus and concentration. The band parted ways with Chenard, leaving Ciras and Magario to start over.
"It's sad though because I've been working with him since eighth grade and we grew up together, learning music together," said Dave. "it;s like not seeing your brother." With a newfound energy, Ciras and Magario were able to be more personally expressive in their music. But, they needed a name, so they got creative.
At the time, the band was known simply as "Zack and Dave" or "Dave and Zack," but after a performance at Java Hut, an impressed fan said to Zack, "Hey! you and the kid... I like you guys!" In a nutshell, Zack became "Me" and Dave became "The Kid."
Dave and Zack can't agree on how to categorize their music into a genre. Zack convincingly asserted "New-aged post-grunge."We was only half serious, and Dave was sure to dismiss that category. MaTK's music may lack proper classification, but both agree that it's what they want to be making, whatever it's called.
Working as producer, Ciras aims to create a sound comparable to a Tim Burton film; intensely dark, yet colorful beyond imagination. Ciras recalls an incident that occurred earlier that day. An older man, clearly, intoxicated, stumbled into the coffee shop. Prior to his forced exodus, a girl capitalized in the scene's enigmatic fascination, if not beauty. Sometimes the darker side of life inspires the best art, according to Ciras.
What inspires Dave? "As convention would have it, I write a lot about relationships and life experiences. I don't always find the words to say what I mean, so it comes out as music. My best work comes from the darker, more painful experiences in my life. I have been inspired by good things, but the music still comes across as dark."
Dave and Zack have been involved with music since a very early age. zack grew up in Dudley, Massachusetts, and started playing music in seventh grade. While at Catholic school, his friend got a guitar, and he got a bass. His relationship with music was more individualistic and self-taught, never having taken a lesson.
Dave, on the other hand, was born into a very artistic, musical family in nearby Webster, Massachusetts. He is the youngest of seven kids. He stayed after school everyday, playing piano for hours. "We were big nerds. We were raised on Star Wars, Star Trek and Lord of the Rings," pronounced Dave. "Once, my mom said, I was maybe four or five, when I was running around the house, marching and singing the imperial march from Star Wars," said Dave. "She said 'Oh, he's going to be a singer.'" "I was the copy cat, I wanted to do what everyone else in my family was doing." He was involved with a choir in fifth grade and participated in jazz and concert bands. His involvement with music was usually in a group, and more structured.
Today, both musicians have expanded their range of musicality, playing many different instruments. Studio responsibilites are shared between guitars, basses, percussion, keyboards, vocals, and other instruments. To his ignorance was recorded in Ciras's home studio, entirely by him and The Kid. Dave and Zack intend to keep progressing on a musical level and as a group. MaTK are interested in breaking out of the local scene. They confess that their fans are, in essence, their friends. This special intimacy is important to the band. Their open mic hosting residencies at the Java Hut, Tuesdays, and the Acoustic Java, Wednesdays, allows such involvement.Their goal to network is very important to them. They continue to book performances at coffee shops, colleges, and other venues, creating friends and fans along the way.
When asked, Dave and Zack emphasized that there are a couple of things they would like their fans and audiences to know about them. "We're serious. We have to be entertaining at the open mics, but everything we write and play means more to us than people think. we mean every word, every note." On a lighter note, Zack added, "Add we give free hugs!"
